How Magic Works

Magic in Auro originates from a primordial force known as the Essa. The Essa is the fundamental energy that composes all existence. It flows through the physical world, the spiritual realm, and every living being. All magic, regardless of form, is an interaction with the Essa.

There are three primary expressions of magic practiced across Auro: Incantation, Manifest, and Divine. While each operates differently, all draw upon the same universal source in one way or another.

Incantation

Incantation is the spoken discipline of magic. Through precise verbal formulas, a magic user commands the Essa present within the natural world to respond.

For example, the phrase “Cinde En Dokh” directs the Essa within a physical medium to ignite, producing flame. Basic incantations are commonly used for practical tasks such as lighting torches or kindling campfires. More advanced practitioners can manipulate the Essa in increasingly complex ways.

Incantation relies on alignment, focus, and correct invocation. It does not inherently require any type of sacrifice from the caster.

Manifest

Manifest magic is more intimate and far more dangerous. Rather than commanding external Essa, the practitioner draws upon their own internal spiritual energy, often referred to as their spark. Ones spark is not separate from their soul. It is the individual expression of the Essa within a person. The Essa is universal and infinite, while the spark is personal and finite to a degree.

In most cases, using Manifest magic consumes part of the caster’s life force. Overuse can weaken or even kill the practitioner. Those who achieve exceptional spiritual refinement by aligning themselves closely with the noble tenets undergo a profound transformation. At that elevated state, the deficit normally associated with Manifest magic may no longer apply under certain conditions.

Such mastery relates to a deeper metaphysical shift in the caster’s relationship to the Essa itself. This truth will be explored more fully throughout the series.

Divine

Divine magic is granted, not commanded.

Those who adhere faithfully to the noble tenets may be rewarded in proportion to their spiritual alignment. This form of magic flows through devotion and virtue rather than technique. It can manifest in blessings, protection, or other divine experiences.

Unlike Incantation or Manifest, Divine magic depends upon moral and spiritual resonance. It is not simply accessed. It is bestowed.

The Nature of the Soul [Spark]

Every living being possesses a soul. That soul is comprised of the Essa expressed uniquely within them as their spark. Some traditions use the terms interchangeably, while others distinguish between the universal energy of the Essa and the individualized expression known as their spark.

Understanding this distinction is essential to understanding magic in Auro and why some practitioners can evolve beyond its traditional limits.

There are also rare cosmic influences tied to magic and ones spirit, including connections to the moon Valos and the Morlin Twins. These forces operate under unique conditions which will become more clear in due time.
